Residents on Wednesday protested against the new site identified for the relocation of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) outlet in Arattavadi village.

Residents said the village was home to a Tasmac outlet for many years. They protested after learning that efforts were being made to identify a plot of land in Arattavadi village for the relocation of a Tasmac outlet from neighboring Thanda village. They prevented government officials, including Tahsildars, from inspecting the proposed land.

After being informed, the officials and the police reached the spot and pacified the agitated residents, who dispersed after the officials assured that the relocation of the shop would not be done on the proposed plot.

“The Ariyakunjur main road is a crucial stretch that connects major cities in the vicinity. Such an exit will result in traffic jams, accidents and inconvenience to road users,” said N. Sarala, a resident. Residents said commuters from at least 20 nearby villages arrive at the identified plots to board buses.

Tasmac officials said the outlet in Thanda village was closed recently following complaints from residents.
