Wayanad prakrithi samrakshan Samithi demanded that the forest department and Grama Panchayats of the Vypady, Mepadi and Thondernad to end the uncontrolled bamboo collection in areas.
Samithi claimed that a bamboo mafia working in the district smuggles a few tons of bamboo with the support of forest and Panchayat officials. Bamboo forests, which are located along the banks of rivers from western Ghats, play a crucial role in preventing the surrounding areas from heavy erosion.
They also help maintain the ecosystem of the river, as well as the cold and water quality. Bamboo harvesting for industrial purposes requires the approval of the Biological Diversity Council, but this rule is reportedly widely disturbed in Wayanad.
Although Panchayat has banned bamboo cutting, the ban is often violated within its limits, claimed Samithi and urged higher officials at the Ministry to take the appropriate steps.
