Realizing the importance of fire safety measures in case of fires, residents of a gated community in Old Alwal celebrated Republic Day with patriotic fervor on Monday, adding a special touch by conducting a mock fire drill to deal with any unusual incidents.
The demonstration took place against the backdrop of a fire in one of the apartments on Diwali, when a mattress caught fire after a lit lamp fell on it during a puja. The timely intervention of residents, including several trained in dealing with fire situations, prevented a major disaster.
On Monday, the management of Mahalaxmi’s Sai Srinivasam Apartments in Retreat Colony used the Republic Day celebrations to impress upon residents the need to learn basic fire precautions. Aditya Fire & Safety Systems representatives gave a demonstration on how to put out a fire.
After the simulated exercise, the representatives invited the youth and apartment security staff to get their first experience of using an ABC fire extinguisher. They also explained the immediate steps to be taken in case of an emergency. SSA president Karthik and treasurer V. Goverdhan Rao said the gated community of over 600 residents should know the basics of dealing with fires. The effort was to equip residents with first-hand knowledge about dealing with such situations, they added.
The closed community, consisting of four blocks, is equipped with fire safety equipment according to HZS guidelines. It may be mentioned that a former junior officer of the Indian Air Force, Sushil Tyagi, had earlier donated a fire extinguisher worth ₹2,000 in addition to the existing equipment.
