On the afternoon of Saturday, October 25, 2024, tens of thousands of users experienced disruptions accessing various Microsoft programs, including Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, and Azure. The issue was first acknowledged by the official Microsoft 365 Status team in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "We are investigating a problem in which users may not be able to access Outlook features and services." The post directed users to the admin center for further details under reference number MO1020913.
Reports of outages began surging around 3:30 PM ET, with over 37,000 users reporting issues with Outlook and approximately 24,000 experiencing problems with Microsoft 365, according to DownDetector. Additionally, around 150 users reported disruptions with their Teams accounts. The outages appeared to be most concentrated in major metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
On social media platform X, frustrated users voiced concerns about their inability to access Outlook emails, raising questions about the scope and impact of the global outage. Microsoft provided updates via its Service Status Page, but the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
