Repatriation process to bring back the Kallakurichi woman who was subjected to harassment in Kuwait

A woman from Kallakurichi district, who was stranded in Kuwait after allegedly facing abuse while employed as a domestic help, has reached the Indian Embassy safely. The repatriation process was initiated after videos of the woman seeking help went viral on social media.

According to official sources, the woman identified as A. Anitha of Oorangani village near Sankarapuram in the district had allegedly gone to Kuwait a few months ago for domestic work through an agent. In a recently released video, Anitha claimed that she was subjected to various forms of harassment during the past two months while working in Kuwait. She also claimed that she had not been provided with food for the past few days.

In the video, Anitha pleaded for help to return to Tamil Nadu.

Kallakurichi Collector JE Padmaja told The Hindu that the authorities have verified the woman’s identity and contacted her family members. Officials contacted her parents and collected the required details, which were then forwarded to the relevant authorities in Chennai, she said.

The woman is currently safe at the Indian Embassy in Kuwait. She is expected to be repatriated after the documentation and vetting procedures are completed, Ms. Padmaja said.

Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police I Shahnaz said the agent identified as Selvaraj, who sent Anitha to Kuwait to work as a domestic help, has been arrested. Proceedings were registered against him under the 1983 Emigration Act.
