Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who has been constantly attacked by Donald Trump over the state’s Somali community, hit out at the US president on Friday over his “severely retarded” remark.
In a post on X, Trump said the refugee burden is the root cause of social dysfunction in America.
He further added that hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are completely taking over the once great state of Minnesota.
“Somali gangs roam the streets looking for ‘prey’ while our wonderful people stay holed up in their apartments and houses hoping to be left alone. Minnesota’s seriously retarded Governor Tim Walz is doing nothing, either out of fear, incompetence, or both, while it’s worst.”
Afterward, Walz said in response to the note in the Thanksgiving message, “Release the MRI results.”
A few weeks ago, Trump, who had previously revealed that he underwent an MRI at Walter Reed Medical Center on October 10, said he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan as part of his recent physical, describing the scan as “very standard.”
“It’s very standard to get an MRI. What, you think I wouldn’t have one? Other people will get one… I had an MRI. The doctor said it was the best result he’s ever seen as a doctor,” Trump said.
Last week, Trump also pledged to end temporary legal protections for Somalis living in Minnesota.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said he would “immediately” revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a legal guarantee against deportation for immigrants from certain countries, for Somali residents in Minnesota.
The announcement drew immediate backlash from some state leaders and immigration experts.
Heidi Altman, vice president for policy at the National Immigration Law Center, said there is no legal mechanism that allows the president to end protected status for a particular community or state with which he has beef.
According to Congressional records, about 705 Somali individuals had approved TPS applications as of March 31, and “DHS estimates that approximately 4,300 individuals could become newly eligible for TPS” if it were to be extended.
TPS was originally granted to Somalis in 1991 and was last extended in July 2024 “due to conditions in Somalia that prevent individuals from returning safely,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Meanwhile, after an Afghan national shot and killed two National Guard soldiers in Washington, killing one, Trump said he would suspend migration from what he called “third world countries.”
