Work on building artificial islands for local migration birds, boating facilities and tiled pedestrian track for visitors in the Saduperi irrigation tank near the Velore Corporation on the Chennai-Bengalur (NH-48) highway.
Minister Duraimurugan inspected the ongoing work founded in March by the WRD (WRD) department, which maintains tanks and urged officials to speed up the remaining works. “The permanent tank helps recharge groundwater covering at least 8-10 villages around it. Most of these areas are agricultural villages,” said Hindu E. Amrish, auxiliary engineer (AE), WRD (Vellore anaicut).
The tank, which spreads over 250 hectares, can on average store 205 MCFT (a million cubic tracks) of water. Under the rehabilitation and renewal of the Twin Lakes scheme, the WRD was intrigued by the rejuvenation work at the cost of the CRORE 19 GBP.
As part of this, Saduperi is planted to the original depth of 6.5 meters. During the monsoon, the tank will be deepened to store additional rainwater. There is also a tiled corridor on the tank bundle within a distance of 1.5 km. Hand failures are also mounted to prevent pedestrians, especially children, fall into the tank. The steel arrangement of the seating will also be built on a pedestrian track with an adequate lighting device.
Two artificial islands are formed in the middle of the tank to attract tourists. Native trees will be planted on the islands. Seedlings will be obtained without costs from the Ministry of Horticulture and Farmers. A large number of local migratory birds will pull into the tank. They will also be built a navigation facility.
WRD officials said that the southern end of the tank has many human settlements. Most of the garbage was thrown into the tank, resulting in pollution. To avoid such illegal dumping, a two -meter steel fence will be built around the tank up to 1700 meters.
As part of the effort to facilitate access to the tank, the WRD will lay the Bitumen approximation of the road for approximately two kilometers to connect the tank with corporate areas such as Thorades and Konavattam. Reduces a detour of at least 8-10 km. The new section will also help WRD officials easily view water points during the monsoon.
At present, it depends on water consumption of more than 15,000 inhabitants in at least eight surrounding villages. The peaks were laid around the tank bundle by local bodies to meet the needs of the water of their inhabitants. Of the 519 tanks in the vellore, 101 tanks are maintained by WRD, of which only 16 tanks in Vellore Taluk.
