PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday urged the state government to regularize the services of temporary teachers who have passed the Teaching Eligibility Test (TET) and are currently working in schools.

In a statement Dr. Ramadoss said around 5,000 intermediate and post-graduate teachers who passed the TET between 2013 and 2017 have been appointed as temporary teachers in the academic year 2022-23.

He noted that these teachers joined the service towards the end of COVID-19 and were working under severe financial constraints, even serving almost five months without a fixed salary.

Currently, intermediate teachers receive an honorarium of ₹12,000 per month and graduate teachers receive ₹15,000. Pointing out that the Supreme Court had made TET mandatory for the appointment of teachers, he said there would be no legal hurdle in regularizing these qualified teachers.

He urged the government to grant them permanent status or, if facing financial constraints, provide job security through regularization on the basis of seniority and higher consolidated wages.
