Red alert issued for Wayanad; holiday declared for educational institutions
Wayanad region has been put on high alert after heavy rainfall was forecast. The Met Office has issued a red warning for extremely heavy rainfall in the Hill District for June 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday).
In view of the alert, an emergency meeting of district officials headed by District Collector DR Meghasree has been called on Friday (June 5) to review the preparedness measures. The Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the district, including vocational colleges, on Saturday. The holiday also applies to religious studies classes, training centers and special schools. However, residential schools and colleges are exempt from the holiday.
Ms. Meghasree, who is also the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, ordered the suspension of operations in all quarries in the district and suspension of all machine-assisted earthworks.
The Collector also ordered the suspension of operations at tourist destinations, including homestays located in vulnerable disaster-prone areas. In addition, all adventure tourism activities and tourism programs have been ordered to stop.
