Real Madrid faces stiff competition from Chelsea in the race to sign Bournemouth’s promising centre-back Dean Huijsen, according to reports from Spain.
The 19-year-old, born in the Netherlands but now representing Spain internationally, made his debut for La Roja in the Nations League against his homeland on Thursday. Huijsen has been a fixture in transfer rumors lately, particularly after it emerged that his Bournemouth contract includes a £50 million release clause.
Several top clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Newcastle United, have reportedly expressed interest in Huijsen. However, links to Real Madrid have intensified in recent days. The young defender joined Bournemouth from Juventus last July for just over £12 million and has since impressed with his performances.
Huijsen has not shied away from addressing the speculation, stating: “It’s an honor to have such a big team interested in you; it’s something special and it means you’re doing well.”
According to MARCA, scouts from both Real Madrid and Chelsea were in attendance to watch Huijsen during Spain’s match against the Netherlands. Both clubs are reportedly convinced of his ability to thrive at the highest level.
Huijsen’s composed performance in a challenging international debut is said to have particularly impressed Real Madrid’s hierarchy. The pressure of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs far exceeds what he has experienced at Bournemouth, and his adaptability has caught their attention.
Real Madrid’s pursuit of Huijsen aligns with their defensive needs this season. Injuries have plagued the team, with Eder Militao ruled out for the season due to an ACL injury, David Alaba still recovering from a similar setback, and Antonio Rudiger also missing time. This has opened the door for academy graduate Raul Asencio to step up as a key player.
Chelsea, too, has faced defensive issues, prompting them to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace. Huijsen’s ability to adapt to the Premier League and his seamless integration into Bournemouth’s well-coached side make him an attractive prospect for the Blues.
