Real Madrid officially brought Alvaro Carreras back to Santiago Bernabeu and signed the Spanish left back from SL Benfica for a six -year agreement. The 22 -year -old man returns to the club, where he once trained as a teenager, now a much more polished and combat defender.
Carreras went through the Madrid Academy between 2017 and 2020 before jumping into Manchester United in search of seniors. While he never appeared for the first United team, Preston North End loans and Granada offered him a much needed experience. His breakthrough came after the transition of the loan to Benfica in January 2024, which became a permanent step of about 5 million just a few months later.
“Real Madrid CF and Sport Lisboa E Benfica have achieved an agreement on the transfer of Lvaro Carreras player, which is connected with our club in the next six seasons, until June 30, 2031,” Los Blancos read.
His rise in Portugal was fast and impressive. Last season, Carreras played 68 games in all competitions, counted five goals and was helpful to help Benfice to finish the second in the league. He also regularly presented in the Champions League and was part of their Club World Cup group.
Now Madrid has paid EUR 50 million (€ 43 million) to ensure its return – an agreement that will also benefit Manchester United, who is entitled to 20% of Benfica’s profit.
Carreras comes as part of a large defensive reconstruction led by the new Xabi Alonso manager. The Spanish coach, now at the helm after leaving Carl Ancelotti, has already brought Dean Huijsen and Trento Alexandra-Arnold to transform the backline over the frustrating campaign 2024–25. Madrid ended the season without a trophy, disappeared on Lalize, Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
Ferland Mendy is fighting with fitness problems and Francia is trying to create its own position, Carreras was Alonso the highest goal to fill the void on the left. Spain U21 International with a European high -level experience is considered to be someone who can not only immediately insert into the line -up, but also in the long run grows to a key figure.
