RCB vs GT: Kohli vs Siraj, Gill vs Bhuvneshwar – Five key player battles that could decide IPL 2026 final
Battle of 5 players who could shape tonight’s IPL final in Ahmedabad (Image: X) The IPL 2026 season has finally reached its grand finale. The two giants of the tournament, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, will now go head-to-head in the battle for glory. RCB have reached their second consecutive IPL final and are aiming to defend the title they won at the same venue last season where they finally broke their 18-year trophy drought. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, will have the advantage of playing in familiar home conditions in Ahmedabad as they chase their second IPL crown. While the final will be decided by collective performances, a few individual battles could affect the outcome of the biggest game of the season. Here are five key player matchups to watch out for:
Sai Sudharsan vs Jacob Duffy
Sai Sudharsan goes into the final after suffering two bizarre dismissals in his last two matches. The GT opener will be desperate to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself on the biggest stage. One bowler who could challenge him soon is New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy. Duffy once dismissed Sudharsan in his IPL sessions and it came in one of the strangest dismissals in the tournament’s history. Chasing a massive target of 255, Sudharsan started aggressively, smashing Duffy’s first two deliveries for a boundary. However, on Duffy’s next over, Sudharsan attempted a cut and timed the ball perfectly for four. But in a freak moment, his bat slipped from his hands, bounced on the pitch and bounced back onto the stumps, resulting in a bizarre dismissal. With the new ball likely to move in Ahmedabad, this battle could set the tone for GT’s innings.
Shubman Gill vs Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Few bowlers have been as successful against Shubman Gill as Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The veteran swing bowler has dismissed the GT skipper six times in the history of the IPL and has kept him from settling down at the crease. Gill faced 79 deliveries from Bhuvneshwar and was forced to play 41 dot balls. The latest chapter came in Qualifier 1 in Dharamshala. Bhuvneshwar set up Gill beautifully before cleaning him up with a delivery that stuck off the surface. Gill managed just two runs from seven balls before heading back to the pavilion. With the new ball in hand and the final at stake, Bhuvneshwar will once again look to remove GT’s biggest batting threat early.
Jos Buttler vs Josh Hazlewood
The middle-order battle between Jos Buttler and Josh Hazlewood promises to be one of the most fascinating contests of the final. In T20 international and franchise cricket, Hazlewood dismissed Buttler six times, sparking a fierce rivalry between the two world-class players. Their final battle came in Qualifier 1. Chasing 255, Buttler attacked Hazlewood, smashing him for 4, 6 and 4 off the first three deliveries of the over. But Hazlewood responded brilliantly. Australian fast overshot Buttler with a slower knuckle cutter. Attempting another attacking shot, Buttler missed the delivery completely and saw his stumps shatter. If Buttler survives Hazlewood, GT’s chances will increase significantly. If Hazlewood wins the battle early, RCB can gain complete control.
Rajat Patidar vs Kagiso Rabada
RCB captain Rajat Patidar scored a remarkable feat against Kagiso Rabada. Patidar scored 56 runs off just 22 deliveries in their back-to-back meetings without being dismissed even once by the South African fast bowler. The best example came during Qualifier 1 in Dharamshala. Patidar produced a stunning 21-ball half-century as he dropped Rabad into the stands. On the very next ball, Rabada went for a hard sweep outside the off-stump, but Patidar stayed deep in his crease and effortlessly hit it over another cover for another six. Rabada has been one of GT’s biggest match winners this season, but if Patidar continues to dominate this match, RCB could gain a huge advantage in the middle overs.
Virat Kohli vs Mohammed Siraj
Perhaps the most emotional competition of the finals. Former teammates Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj will now find themselves on opposite sides in the biggest match of the season. Since Siraj’s move to Gujarat Titans, the two have clashed for the first time in IPL cricket. Kohli scored 31 runs off 19 balls against Siraj and importantly was never dismissed by his former teammate. The rivalry is now reaching its greatest stage. Experts believe that this contest could have a direct impact on the outcome. If Siraj can find a timely move and break Kohli’s defense during the power play, GT could take immediate control of the match. However, if Kohli survives the new ball and settles down, history suggests that RCB will become an incredibly hard side to stop. In a star-studded finale, these five individual battles could ultimately decide who lifts the IPL 2026 trophy in Ahmedabad.
