(Photo by ANI) NEW DELHI: The wait is over. The IPL 2026 season has reached its final destination and two of the most consistent teams of the tournament will fight for the trophy.Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and former champions Gujarat Titans will square off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening, with both sides looking for a second IPL crown. There is no second chance now. One team will finish a remarkable campaign with silverware, while the other will wonder what could have been.On paper, very little separates the finalists. The two teams won nine matches each during the league stage and finished as the top two sides in the points table, with RCB leading only on clean sheet. Both teams won their home games against each other earlier in the season.RCB may have gained a psychological advantage after comprehensively defeating GT in Qualifier 1, but the final presents a different challenge altogether. This time around, the Titans will be playing in familiar conditions in Ahmedabad, where they comfortably defeated RCB during the league phase.Another variation of the competition is the contrasting preparation time. RCB enjoyed almost a week’s rest after sealing their place in the final on Tuesday. The GT, meanwhile, had to struggle through Qualifier 2 on Friday and was further delayed in Ahmedabad, arriving late on Saturday evening.Whether the longer break will help RCB stay fresh or whether GT will carry valuable match momentum into the final remains one of the biggest unknowns in the title race. Two modern IPL power plantsSince entering the competition in 2022, Gujarat Titans have established themselves as one of the most successful franchises in the league. They won the title in their debut season and will reach the finals again in 2023. Sunday’s game will be their third finals appearance in five seasons, while they have now qualified for the playoffs four times in five years.RCB’s rise has been equally impressive. After years of heartbreak, they finally ended their title drought last season and have proved to be one of the most consistent sides in recent campaigns. Sunday’s encounter will be RCB’s fifth IPL final as they attempt to become only the third franchise after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to successfully defend the trophy.History also seems to favor RCB. The Qualifier 1 winner has lifted the trophy in each of the last eight IPL seasons. Still, history alone does not decide the champion. Key battles on the field could. The battle for the new ball could have affected the first halfGT’s batting success has largely revolved around one unstoppable force – the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The duo broke partnership records during the season and remain among the leading scorers in the competition. Gill amassed 722 runs while Sudharsan contributed 710. Along with Rajasthan Royals sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (776), they share the top spot in the batting charts.Behind them, Jos Buttler added another 507 runs, making GT arguably the most productive trio of the tournament. However, their biggest challenge comes in the form of RCB’s experienced new ball attack.Bhuvneshwar Kumar has enjoyed a sensational campaign, picking up 26 wickets from 15 matches and putting himself firmly in contention for a third Purple Cap. Significantly, 15 of those goals came on the power play. His ability to swing the new ball and break partnerships early could prove decisive against GT’s formidable opening pair.Alongside him is Josh Hazlewood, a bowler with an enviable record in major finals. The Australian pacer has featured in five previous T20 finals, ending up on the winning side each time. Experience under pressure is often priceless at night. However, GT’s pace attack is just as threatening.Purple Cap leader Kagiso Rabada was devastating with the new ball, taking 17 of his 28 wickets during the power play. Mohammed Siraj has claimed 13 of his 18 wickets in the same phase, making GT arguably the most dangerous side with the new ball this season. This puts immediate pressure on Virat Kohli and RCB’s top order. Kohli once again led RCB’s batting charts with 600 runs. Injuries and form problems have forced changes around him, but the expected return of Phil Salt provides more stability at the top.The opening exchanges of the final can therefore resemble a mirror image – elite top-order batsmen trying to survive against two of the best new-ball attacks in the competition. The depth of the shot can decide the titleIf the first six overs are likely to be even, the latter stages of the innings could ultimately decide who lifts the trophy.RCB seem to have a significant advantage here.GT’s batting was heavily dependent on his triple. After Gill, Sudharsan and Buttler, Washington Sundar’s 327 runs is the next most significant contribution. Rahul Tewatia chipped in with 183 as the rest of the middle order batsmen struggled for consistency. In contrast, RCB have several match winners in their batting order.Along with Kohli, Rajat Patidar scored 486 runs and Devdutt Padikkal added 463. Tim David (281), Krunal Pandya (225), Phil Salt (202) and Venkatesh Iyer (177) made important contributions at various stages of the tournament. This depth was reflected in RCB’s results. Eight different players have won the Player of the Match award in RCB’s victories this season, underlining the variety of match-winning options available.Krunal’s all-round influence was particularly valuable. He is one of only two players this season to score more than 200 runs while taking 10 wickets, underscoring his importance in pressure situations.Gujarat Titans’ formula remains simpleDespite questions about depth, GT has a straightforward plan that has repeatedly produced success. They won six of the seven matches in which Gill and Sudharsan survived past the fifth. Once the opening pair settle down, the GT is extremely hard to stop.So the challenge for RCB is clear: strike early and expose a middle-order that hasn’t faced consistent pressure all season. For GT, the mission is just as obvious. Let their star opening pair lay the platform and then let their powerful attack squeeze RCB.The final promises to be a fascinating clash between GT’s home advantage and RCB’s superior batting depth. In a competition featuring two remarkably complete sides, that difference could ultimately decide which team lifts the IPL trophy on Sunday night.
