When news broke of the trade between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, with Ravindra Jadeja heading to RR and Sanju Samson going the other way, the early consensus leaned heavily in Chennai’s favour.
In the long run, it made sense. Samson has been firmly entrenched in the T20I setup in India and just produced the tournament of his life, finishing as player of the tournament as India defended their T20 crown in Ahmedabad. Jadeja, meanwhile, retired from T20 internationals after winning the title in 2024, and questions remained whether he still had the tools to thrive in the shortest format.

These doubts were not entirely misplaced. In a format that is increasingly leaning toward power plays, where bowlers are routinely dismantled, Jadeja’s role became less defined.

RETURN TO CRAFT
However, as the first days of IPL 2026 showed, experience still finds its way. Like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Jadeja has proven once again that the class can adapt, recalibrate and remain relevant.
In Guwahati, on a surface that seemed much more useful to the sailors, Jadeja quietly reminded everyone what makes him such a valuable T20 operator. While the spotlight was naturally on the new-ball movement and the quicks who used it, Jadeja carved out his own influence in conditions that didn’t necessarily scream for spin.
There was no dramatic reappearance, no sudden revelation of a secret. Instead, it was a return to the basics that defined his success over the years. Subtle changes of pace, unrelenting accuracy and keen understanding of each other’s matchups allowed him to stay in front of batters.
His dismissal of Sarfaraz Khan was an example of this. Slowing it down to around 80s, Jadeja stretched the batter into a strike that arrived a fraction too soon. It’s a trap that many fall into against him, the assumption that the pace will remain constant, only to be undone by this slight change. Against Shivam Dube, the challenge was of a different nature. Dube is among the most devastating spinners in the format and the match has historically favored batsmen. But Jadeja did not back down from it. Instead, he leaned into the competition.
After being dispatched for a six off a full delivery in the slot, Jadeja adapted almost immediately. The length was pulled back a bit, the line moved away from the Dube arch and within two balls the advantage was reversed. The catch in the deep wasn’t just a wicket but a small statement of control.
“I think pink suits me,” Jadeja said after the match, reflecting on his return to Rajasthan colours. “I’ve known Shivam Dube for a long time. I’ve been batting with him in the nets, so I understand how he approaches the spinners. I was prepared for that and I tried to jump outside because I knew he would want to play big shots against me.”
“I felt the wicket was sticking a bit and the ball was spinning so I really enjoyed the bowling. My job was to hit the right areas and leave the rest on the field.”
MORE THAN THE BASICS
That last line perhaps best sums up Jadeja’s enduring value. In a format that often celebrates excess, it suffers from restraint and precision. It doesn’t need an extravagant turn or an extravagant variation. He needs enough help and discipline to use it.
What also stood out was that he didn’t feel like a player who just relied on past methods. There were also glimpses of evolution. In the practice session leading up to the game, Jadeja was seen experimenting with what appeared to be a carrom ball, something not usually associated with him.
He may not be ready for the match yet, but the intention is clear. Even at this stage of his career, Jadeja is not content to stand still. There is a willingness to adapt, add and stay ahead of the format that rarely allows for stagnation. Jadeja has often won battles against critics, is this just another chapter in the same book? In the broader context of trade, it is still too early to make definitive judgments. Samson’s value remains immense and the storylines shift and evolve as the season progresses.
But in Guwahati, on a night when the conditions seemed to favor a different skill setJadeja offered the first meaningful contribution to the debate. Not by noise, but by control. Not through reinvention, but through improvement.
And in doing so, he subtly tilted the narrative, just enough to remind everyone that he still had a say in it.
