Former India coach and Mumbai cricket legend Ravi Shastri will be felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday 8 April. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will unveil the Ravi Shastri stand and dedicate the stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulja at the iconic ground.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will attend the ceremony. MCA President Ajinkya Naik, Apex Council members, officials and dignitaries from the cricket community will also be present. The MCA Council approved the proposal at its February meeting.
The Level 1 stand below the press box at the Wankhede Stadium will be called the Ravi Shastri Stand. This recognizes Shastri’s significant contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket as a player, captain and coach.
Gate #3, Gate #5 and Gate #6 will be revealed as Dilip Sardesai Gate, Diana Edulji Gate and Eknath Solkar Gate respectively. These dedications pay tribute to Bombay stalwarts who have left a lasting impact on the game.
Shastri played 80 Tests and 150 One Day Internationals for India. He also led India to memorable Test series victories against Australia in 2019 and 2021 as head coach.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik described the ceremony as a proud moment for cricket in Mumbai. “This ceremony is a proud moment for Mumbai cricket as we come together on April 9 to honor these iconic figures. The unveiling of the Ravi Shastri stand, along with the dedication of the stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulja, reflects our deep respect for their invaluable contributions, while we look forward to celebrating their same future generations at the Wankhede Stadium in their pursuit of values and greatness.”
MCA has earlier felicitated Rohit Sharma at the Wankhede Stadium in recognition of his contributions to Indian cricket. The initiative to commemorate these cricketing greats reinforces Mumbai’s rich sporting heritage and the Wankhede’s role as a landmark in Indian cricket.
