The Islamic holy month of Ramzan began on Wednesday night as Muslims across the state begin their fast at dawn on Thursday morning.

Throughout the month, they will fast from dawn to dusk, devoting themselves to special prayers, spiritual meditations and acts of love.

On Wednesday evening, special Ramzan night prayers, Tharaveeh, began in congregation in almost all mosques. Most of the mosques across the state were built before the holy month.

In addition to special night prayers, almost all mosques have iftar facilities. Devotees will contribute fruits, snacks and food to be shared at the time of breaking the fast at sunset.

Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. Fasting during Ramzan is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Muslims believe that it was during this holy month that God began to reveal the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad through a series of revelations over time.

Abstinence during the day in Ramzan goes beyond eating and drinking. Those observing the fast are also expected to abstain from smoking, sexual activity and other unnecessary worldly activities.

Several Muslim organizations have called on the community to make meaningful use of this holy month by engaging in spiritual practices and charitable work.

Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari Thangal, chairman of Madin Academy here, said: “Fasting should bring people closer to God through purification of body and mind.” He further emphasized the importance of exercising self-discipline in speech and behavior, especially on social networks.

During Ramzan, Muslims generally avoid hosting and attending large social events such as weddings and receptions. However, Iftaar (breaking the fast) gatherings are encouraged as they provide an opportunity for community bonding and social togetherness.
