Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy has asked the forest department for a detailed report on the measures taken after the death of a tiger and an elephant in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
Mr. Reddy has written to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and sought a report within a week to ascertain the causes of death of the two animals and investigate whether there was any dereliction of duty by the forest officials.
He said the death of a trapped tiger in Maddur area and the missing tusks of a wild elephant in Karadikallu Gudda area were serious problems.
“The fact that such incidents have taken place deep in the forest areas of the tiger reserve has raised serious questions about the forest department’s patrolling system, monitoring and measures taken to protect wildlife,” the minister wrote.
He said there would be zero tolerance for negligence in wildlife conservation and a thorough scientific investigation should be conducted into both the incidents, apart from launching an inquiry to find out if the deaths were caused by poachers.
“It should be investigated whether there is any link between the two incidents. Necessary steps should be taken to ensure that no evidence is destroyed during the investigation,” he said.
He also directed that the Deputy Conservators of Forests and Assistant Conservators of Forests in the state should regularly visit the forest areas under their jurisdiction and conduct regular patrols.
“Officials should not be limited to sitting in offices and taking reports, they should personally visit forest areas and strengthen patrols, monitor staff performance and conduct regular anti-poaching activities in forest areas,” he said.
He said lapses in patrolling should be identified and strict disciplinary action should be taken against negligent officials and employees.
