The Rajya Sabha on Friday (December 12, 2025) paid tributes to former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who died this morning, with Chairman CP Radhakrishnan saying the country has lost a respected parliamentarian and an able administrator.
Patil served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing the state of Maharashtra, from 2004 to 2010.

“It is with deep sorrow that I refer to the passing away of Shivraj Patil Ji, a former member of this House, who passed away today, December 12, 2025, at the age of 90,” Mr. Radhakrishnan said during the morning’s Zero Hour proceedings.
The Congress veteran and former Union Home Minister died on Friday morning in his hometown of Latur in Maharashtra.
“The country has lost an experienced statesman, an able administrator and a respected parliamentarian. We deeply mourn the demise of Sri Shivraj Patilji,” Radhakrishnan added.
Members observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for the memory of the deceased.
“Born on October 12, 1935, Patil Ji was a distinguished public figure who held several important constitutional and parliamentary posts during his long and distinguished career. He served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha and later as the Union Home Minister,” MR. said Radhakrishnan.
Patil also served as the Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
“A dignified and quiet statesman, Patilji was widely respected for his deep understanding of parliamentary procedures, unwavering commitment to democratic values and calm and measured approach to public life. His contributions to the proceedings of this House and the administration of the state remain remarkable,” the Speaker said.
Patil died at his ‘Devghar’ residence after a brief illness, family sources said, adding that his funeral will be held on Saturday.
