Rajnath unveils DFP-2026 to accelerate DRDO’s defense research and development projects

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday (June 29, 2026) issued the Delegation of Financial Powers to DRDO (DFP-2026), a major reform aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and timely execution of strategic research and development projects.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Singh said the revised framework will facilitate faster production and deployment of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)-developed systems, platforms and technologies into the armed forces.

He added that DFP-2026 will strengthen collaboration with industry and academia and further advance the government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

It will increase self-sufficiency

Mr. Singh said the new framework of financial powers will enhance self-reliance in defense technology and significantly enhance the country’s defense preparedness.

According to the Ministry of Defence, DFP-2026 is designed to strengthen functional empowerment at various levels within the Ministry of Defense Research and Development.

The revised framework provides dedicated funding provisions for trial campaigns, testing and evaluation activities, authorizes approval of pre-project research and development initiatives, and clearly separates funding authority for grants-in-aid related to Extra-Mural Research Projects, Defense Innovation Accelerator-Centres of Excellence, and Technology Development Fund projects under separate schedules.
