The Minister of Railway Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) that 17,000 general and Prague coaches would be introduced in the next five years.
In the written response in Lok Sabha, Mr. Vaishnaw said that the percentage of coaches outside AC (general and sleeping) from a total of 82,200 coaches increased to approximately 70% (57,200), while there are about 25,000 (30%) AC Bogies.
“The railroad significantly increased the facilities for passengers demanding general routes. In the last financial year 2024-25, 1,250 general coaches were used on long distance trains,” Vaishnaw said.
“In addition to the current high share of coaches outside AC (~ 70% of total coaches), the railroads are carried out by a special production program for 17,000 trainers outside AC General/Sleep over the next five years,” he added.
Due to the higher availability of general coaches, the number of passengers who travel generally passengers and unconditional coaches increased. Over the past seven years (2018-19 to 2024-25), 4,193 passengers have traveled in Indian railways. The average number of passenger trains running daily increased from 13,169 trains in 2019-20 to 13,940 trains in 2024-25.
“During 2020-21 and 2021-22, how Covid for years, 99 crore and 275 passengers traveled in generally/non-reserved coaches.
The number of seats available for passengers outside AC has increased over the years. Of the total seats of 69 lamps, there are 54 seats that are not AC (78%) and 15 lakh alternating seats (22%).
