Farmers and agricultural laborers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) on Friday (December 5, 2025) blocked railway tracks for several hours at several places in Punjab as part of their ‘symbolic rail roko’ agitation.
The protest was held to get the Electricity Bill 2025 withdrawn, accusing the Center of showing indifference to their concerns.
“We want the Center to withdraw the amendments to the Electricity Act, which will only harm the agriculture sector and bring more financial hardship to farmers. Besides, the state government is trying to sell government land in various ways, which we will never accept and would never allow. The state government should not take any step against the interest of Punjab and Punjabis,” said senior farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pand.
Mr. Pandher alleged that several farmers’ leaders were detained by the police before the protest. “Despite the state government’s attempts to disrupt our agitation, farmers and farm laborers came in large numbers and sat on railway tracks between 1 pm and 3 pm to press for their demands,” he added.
He warned of escalation and said the agitation would intensify if their demands remained ignored. “On December 10, we will remove prepaid smart meters as a protest,” he added.
