R. Lathadevi (CPI) of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), elected from Chadayamangalam division, assumed office as the new Kollam district panchayat president on Saturday (December 27, 2025). She got 17 votes out of 27 votes cast, while Meera (Congress) of United Democratic Front (UDF) representing Thalavoor division got 10 votes.
District Collector N. Devidas, serving as the Returning Officer, administered the oath. The ceremony held at the district panchayat hall was attended by the president’s husband and minister GR Anil, animal husbandry and dairy development minister J Chinchurani and CPI(M) acting district secretary S Jayamohan. Former presidents PK Gopan and Sam K. Daniel, former minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran, former mayor Honey Benjamin, additional district magistrate G. Nirmal Kumar, district panchayat secretary Suresh Kumar and various political party leaders were also present.

During the afternoon session, SR Arun Babu (CPI(M)), representing Neduvathur division, was sworn in as the Vice President and the newly elected President was sworn in. Mr. Arun Babu got 17 votes while his opponent Varun Alappad (Congress) from Kulasekharapuram division got 10 votes.
