National BC Welfare Association president and Rajya Sabha member R. Krishnaiah on Monday called for a nationwide boycott of classrooms on March 6 to demand the government to release reimbursement of tuition and scholarship fees to students from Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The announcement came at a meeting of the 18 BC association held here. Various leaders, including student association president Pagilly Satish and State BC student hostel president SC, ST Modi Ramdev, said that while nearly ₹8,000 crore is due, less than ₹1,000 crore has been released in the eight months of the academic year.
They accused the government of favoring other programs while denying students their constitutional rights, causing hardships such as withholding of tickets and certificates, loss of jobs and blocking of higher education opportunities.
Alleging that the government’s negligence is affecting the future of students, Mr. Krishnaiah demanded immediate release of funds and warned of protests in district collectors, RDO and MRO offices.
“In the last 2 years, the government has borrowed about ₹ 2.8 crore and earned ₹ 5 crore in taxes. Why is it not possible to release ₹ 8 crore contributions for scholarships and allowances for 15 lakh students?” the leaders asked.
