The city ushered in the New Year in a calm and festive atmosphere as families went out to shopping malls, parks and lakes and stayed lively into the evening.
Markets and bakeries witnessed brisk sales of cakes, while malls and business premises, still decked with Christmas decorations, saw heavy footfall.
There were several private parties around town with music and celebrations that continued well into the night. Many residents chose to celebrate at home.
As the night progressed, the police increased security measures to ensure public safety. Barricades were placed along key routes, including the Chigari bus routes, with police officers deployed at regular intervals, backed up by patrols.
Restaurants and commercial establishments close at designated hours. Police officers carried out checks to curb drink driving and banned several motorists while driving. However, officials said no major accidents or unusual incidents were reported.
Fireworks could be seen in several locations and overall the celebrations were peaceful. Interestingly, concert workers from Blinkit, Zepto who were on strike were seen resuming work in the evening.
