Providing quality education to the children of police personnel is an important part of police welfare and would help the personnel perform their duties more effectively, Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand said on Saturday.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Young India Police Academy (YIPS) Academic Block I at the OCTOPUS-Greyhounds campus in Manchirevula.

Mr. Anand said the initiative followed the Chief Minister’s December 2024 directive to set up a special school for children of police personnel. Created on the lines of Army and Sainik schools, the institution aims to provide education of national and international standards.

The school started functioning from a makeshift campus in April last year with 120 students. Its strength has since increased to around 360 and is expected to reach 700-720 next year when the new building is completed.

The DGP said YIPS will focus on academics, discipline, sports and co-curricular while encouraging students to stay away from drugs, substance abuse and other unhealthy influences. Sports and adventure activities, including cricket, mountain climbing and horse riding, would also be part of school programmes.

The institution will also offer affordable and quality education to children from other parts of society. Home Guard children will be eligible for admission while 50% seats will be reserved for general students.

Mr. Anand said that the government supports the development of YIPS into a full-fledged school offering education up to plus two level on a single campus. Several subcommittees, including academic committees, were formed to oversee its development.

He said the goal was to develop the school into a high-level institution over the next two to three years. He added that the well-being and health of police officers is closely related to effective policing.

DG (Law & Order) Mahesh Bhagwat, DG (OCTOPUS) Anil Kumar, Cyberabad CP Ramesh, IG (P&L) Gajarao Bhupal, AIG Ramana Kumar, Legal & Finance Adviser Sharath Kumar, DCP Srinivas, Additional SP Uday Reddy, ACP, Police Officer and School Principal YIPS Reddysh, Students, Dr. parents participated in the program.
