Qatar’s national team secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America with a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in Doha. It is their second appearance in the finals and the first time they have qualified in the Asian qualification process.
Al Haydos, who returned to the national team in 2025 after retiring in 2024, played a key role in the decider against the UAE. He praised the determination and strong will of his team despite the challenges and emphasized the importance of their collective efforts in achieving this milestone.
“Praise be to God for qualifying our national team for the 2026 World Cup finals,” two-time Asian Cup winner Al Haydos said in a statement.
“A new achievement that brings joy to every Qatari and everyone who belongs to this homeland – made possible by the determination and strong will of our players despite all the challenges.”
The pledge for school and sports facilities in Gaza is part of a wider initiative linking Qatar’s sporting achievements with humanitarian responsibility. Al Haydos highlighted the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh on October 13 as positive steps.
“In moments of celebration, it remains our responsibility to remember the suffering of our brothers and sisters around the world and let our success be a motivation for giving,” he said.
“It is encouraging that this qualification coincides with the peace summit and the success of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which we hope marks the beginning of a truly secure life for our people there.
“God willing, I will contribute to the construction of a school and a sports hall as part of the reconstruction of Gaza – I believe that education and sports are the way to life again.”
