Amid tensions between Washington and Kyiv, it ended Donald TrumpUnder the proposed peace plan, Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled on Friday that the US president’s 28-point plan could be the basis of a “final solution” to end the bloody war that has been raging since 2022.
Putin not only confirmed that Moscow had received Washington’s proposal, but added in televised comments: “I believe it can be used as a basis for a final peace settlement.”
“During this discussion, the American side asked us to make certain compromises and show flexibility, as they said,” Putin said, adding that “despite some complex issues and difficulties” Russia agreed to the proposal during talks in Anchorage, Alaska.
While Putin signaled Moscow’s willingness to end the war, he also threatened to take action against Ukraine if President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decides to reject the proposal, which Kiev says supports key Russian demands.
“If Kiev does not want to discuss President Trump’s proposal and refuses to do so, then they and European warmongers should understand that the events that took place in Kupiansk will inevitably be repeated in other key sectors of the front. Overall, this situation is acceptable to us,” the Russian president said.
The Russian president’s comment (and threat) signaling his willingness to come to the negotiating table with regard to Trump’s proposed peace plan comes as Ukraine has voiced its objections to it.
On Friday, Zelenskyy noted that Kiev faces a choice between losing its dignity or losing US support for the peace plan, saying on television: “Now Ukraine may face a very difficult choice – either lose dignity or risk losing a major partner.”
However, he did not directly reject Trump’s plan, saying: “We appreciate the efforts of the United States, President Trump and his team to end this war. It must be a plan that ensures a real and dignified peace.”
Ukraine was given a week to review and accept the plan, with Trump setting a deadline of Thursday.
