Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Tuesday (December 2nd) that while Moscow is not seeking war with European powers, it is ready to fight if necessary. During ongoing diplomatic efforts to negotiate a settlement to the war in Ukraine, Putin said several European peace proposals were “completely unacceptable” to Russia.
“We don’t want a war with Europe, but if Europe wants a war, Russia is ready right now,” Putin said.
His comments come as European countries push for terms that will ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and future security, while Moscow insists on guarantees that are in line with its strategic interests.
The remarks further strain already strained relations between Moscow and European capitals, where leaders fear any pro-Russian deal could fuel future aggression.
European leaders have urged a peace deal that preserves Ukraine’s territorial integrity and limits Russian advances.
Russia currently controls a significant portion of Ukrainian territory, and its officials have insisted that any deal must reflect what they describe as the “reality on the ground.”
Putin’s remarks come as US envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are in Moscow for talks on potential peace frameworks.
Draft US peace proposals raise concerns
A leaked set of 28 US draft peace proposals last week raised alarm among Ukrainian and European officials. Critics argued that the proposals largely accommodated Moscow’s demands, including curbs on Ukraine’s military, Russian control of a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, and restrictions on NATO membership.
Russian demands and European concerns
Key Russian demands include:
-Ukraine will never join NATO
-Caps for the Ukrainian army
-Recognition of Russian control over Crimea, Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson
-Protections for Russian speakers and Orthodox believers
Ukraine rejects these demands as capitulation and warns that they would leave the country vulnerable to further Russian conquest.
Diplomatic efforts continue
As the US prepared to visit Moscow, Witkoff, Kushner and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Miami with Rust Umerov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, to discuss peace proposals. In Moscow, Witkoff will also meet Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s envoy.
Ukraine and European allies continue to describe the conflict as an imperial land grab by Russia and warn that a Russian victory could ultimately threaten NATO members.
