Punjab Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattana was killed on Thursday (April 2, 2026) evening after a truck rammed into his stationary SUV at Kundli in Haryana’s Sonipat district, police said.
The driver of the SUV also died in the accident, they said.
Jattana (45), who unsuccessfully contested the Punjab Assembly polls from Talwandi Sabo seat in 2017 and 2022, was the district Congress president from Bathinda Rural.
A police official said the truck hit Jattan’s vehicle from the rear on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal highway.
The SUV was parked to fix one of its flat tires, police said.
In the incident, Jattana and his driver Parminder Singh died while his gunman sustained injuries, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rai), Sonipat, Vipin Ahlawat said over phone.
Jattan’s body has been deposited at the Sonipat Civil Hospital, police said.
The truck driver fled the scene after the accident, police said, and the truck has been identified.
Punjab President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring expressed grief over Jattana’s demise.
“We are saddened and extremely devastated to lose a dynamic and promising young leader, Khushbaz Jattan, in a tragic road accident today,” Mr Warring said on X.
The entire Congress party stands with the family at this tragic and devastating moment of shock and grief for all of us, he said.
“It is hard to believe that Khushbaz is no longer with us. It is an irreparable loss for us all. He has left a vacuum in our lives that can never be filled. May Waheguru bless his soul and give the family courage to deal with this devastating tragedy,” Mr Warring said.
Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa also condoled Jattan’s death.
“Deeply saddened by the untimely death of Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattan in a tragic road accident. From his early days as a student leader to becoming an engaged political voice, I have seen his journey up close.”
“It is truly heartbreaking that such a young and promising life has been cut short so suddenly. The party has lost a dedicated and rising leader. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and supporters at this difficult time,” Mr Bajwa said.
