Census 2027, the world’s largest census, has begun, according to the Home Office. The government has launched Phase I of Census 2027 – House and Apartment Census (HLO) from today, marking the beginning of the largest administrative and statistical exercise in the country. This is India’s first ever digital data capture and self-census.
The National Census exercise was launched by President Droupadi Murma’s enumeration, through the self-enumeration option, keeping the proud tradition of launching the National Census by the first citizen of India.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan filled the online form for Census 2027 at Uprashtrapati Bhavan on April 1.
The Census continues to play an important role in governance by serving as a key basis for planning India’s development over the next ten years. Information collected under the Census Act 1948 remains strictly confidential. The digital systems used for Census 2027 are protected by strong encryption and multi-factor authentication to maintain high data security standards.
Citizens were encouraged to actively participate in the process, either by using a self-enumeration device or by fully cooperating with enumerators during household visits.
