Not only is the number of public toilets in the city – more than 360 – woefully insufficient for the place as big as Bengalur, but it is poorly maintained, which many unusable, revealed by reality control.
In the Cubbon park, visited by hundreds a day, visitors report a disgusting odor at the entrance to the toilet blocks and the equipment is not cleaned. Despite the fact that the device is paid, many consider them unusable.
At the bus station Kemegowda (Majestic), one of the busiest Bengalur transport hubs, it is reported that they are particularly bad during rains. “They are smelly and dangerous,” said Manchamma, regular commuting. “No one holds them,” he adds.
Safina Plaza, one of the oldest shopping centers in the city, provides free access to the toilet. “Louza is a necessity and organizations provide it for free,” said the representative, noticing his focus on the basic infrastructure and comfort of customers.
On the other hand, the BDA complex in the HSR VI sector portrays a terrible picture. Women’s toilets are in a state of neglect – missing locks, broken windows, no cleaning and damaged equipment. “We do not use it toilets. We go to the nearby BBMP office,” the woman working in the complex admitted. The technicians in the complex confirmed frequent water supply problems.
Ramya, HSR Layout resident, said “I will end up using a shopping center washroom instead – otherwise it is simply not feasible.”
Other Vinita residents added: “I had no other option than I used a government toilet when I was with my child. It was worrying and inappropriate for use.”
The BDA in Koramangala offers five toilets that are free and mostly safe but not regularly cleaned. “They are safe, but they are not regularly cleaned,” said Saviritha, merchant in the complex.
Despite Bengalur, clean and safe public toilets are still missing in civil infrastructure. Citizens, especially women, are left to navigate among unhygienic options or none at all.
