House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to comment directly on whether the Governor of California Gavin Newsom should be arrested – a controversial idea floating by President Donald Trump – but did not delay his criticism.
“Look, that’s not my stripe. I won’t give you a legal analysis of whether Gavin Newsom should be arrested, but it should be hoarse and feathered. I’ll say it,” Johnson said during Tuesday’s news conference.
Accuses the Newsom of the tiles with ‘Padouchy’
Johnson accused the Newsom of the defending of federal enforcement of law, especially in connection with the immigration raids in Los Angeles, which caused mass protests and a federal military reaction.
“He stands in the way of administration and implementation of federal law, is he applauding bad guys and standing in the way of good people,” Johnson said. “Do your job, man. This is what I say to Gavin Newsom. Stop working on your rebranding and be a governor. Stand for a rule of law.”
Serves Trump’s deployment of soldiers in LA
Johnson expressed strong support for Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and Marines soldiers in Los Angeles, despite the hard objections of California officials.
“President Trump put his hand on the table and said,” Not on my watch, “and we clap it, so we stand with him,” Johnson said. He added that Trump acted “fully in his authority” to “maintain order”.
Federal response justified if the locals fail, says Johnson
Johnson, who echoed Trump’s attitude, claimed that the federal government was to intervene when the state and local authorities failed in his opinion.
“We must maintain a rule of law, and if state and local leaders are unable to do so, the task of the federal government is to enter,” he told reporters outside the White House.
Trump threatens the Newsom by arrest
The political conflict escalated after Trump suggested that the newsome should be arrested for defiance of federal recovery.
“I’d do it if I were Tom (Homan, Border Car). I think it’s great,” Trump told reporters on Monday when he asked about the arrest of a California governor. Homan himself said that there was no such discussion.
Newsom calls Trump’s rhetoric “dictatorial”
The Governor Newsom strongly rebuked Trump’s remarks and called them authoritarian and dangerous.
“The President of the United States has just called on the arrest of the Governor’s meeting,” wrote Newsom on Instagram and published Trump’s statement. “This is the day I was hoping I would never see in America.”
On X, Newsom added: “These are deeds of dictator, not president. I don’t care if you are a democrat or a Republican – this is a line we cannot cross as a nation.”
Background: protests and deployment of soldiers
The replacement comes in the middle of the escalating protests in Los Angeles over the ice raids. Trump bypassed the Objections of Newsom on the mission of the National Guard soldiers and later added 700 Marines. Since then, California has filed a lawsuit for questioning deployment and called it unconstitutional and violations of state sovereignty.
