Newton Das confirmed that in the 2016 assembly elections he voted for Kakdwip Mla Pakhira Kakdwip Mla Pakhira in Kakdwip Mla Pakhira, but could not specify whether he was currently in India or Bangladesh.
In the middle of the alleged inconsistency in voters’ lists in West Bengal, a person who was active in the protest of students in Bangladesh in 2024 was a registered voter in the Kakdwip segment.
While several youth photos, Newton Das, participating in the movement that brought a change in the regime in the neighboring country last year, is available on social media, Mr. Das himself said he was a citizen of India. However, he did not deny that he was actively involved in protests in Bangladesh.
“In 2024 I went to Bangladesh for problems related to the property of the ancestors and I was caught in the revolution. I was a voter in Kakdwip since 2014, but in 2017 I lost my voter card. In 2018 I got a fresh Volice card with the help of local Manturam Pakhira,” Das Das said.
Mr. Das confirmed that in the 2016 assembly elections he voted for Kakdwip Mla Pakhira for Kakdwip Mla Pakhira in Kakdwip Mla Pakhira, but could not specify whether he is currently in India or Bangladesh.
Tapan Das, one of the cousins of Mr. Das, said his “brother was born in Bangladesh and voted on voting rights in both countries”. His account, however, differed from Mr. Das.
“He (Mr. Das) came here after the pandemic for the sale of some land and has not come here since. Since he was born in Bangladesh, he has also been a voter Bangladesh. It is his fault that he is registered as a voter in both countries,” Mediaperonsons said. Kakdwip is located near Sundarbans, which shares border boundaries with Bangladesh.
The incident triggered the main line in political circles, when the Bharatiya party Janata accused the ruling Trinamool of the inclusion of Bangladesh nationals as voters in West Bengal.
The leader of the opposition of Suvenda Adhikari said that the lakhs of the Bangladesh are registered as voters in West Bengal. Mr. Adhikari also claimed that the name of the voters in the district of Murshidabad included the name Saada Sheikha, the alleged terrorist clothing worker Ansarullah Bangla. West Bengal BJP President of the Sukant Majumdar described the latest incident as another shining example of the “Egiya Bangl model”.
“The same Newton, who was seen by the stick during the Bangladeshi Movement of the Reform Movement, is now a registered voter in Kakdwip,” said Mr. Majumdar, accusing the ruling party and chief Minister Mamata Banata for the prosperous “illegal infiltration industry”.
Trinamool’s management tried to turn the tables on the BJP and stressed that the work on the protection of international borders and preventing illegal infiltration consisted of borderline security (BSF). “Whether these people come from soil, water or air, the BSF and trade unions are responsible. The state administration will surely perform its role,” Kunal Ghosh, leader of Trinamool, said.
In February 2025, Mrs Banerjee allegedly irregularities in the voters’ list claimed that voters from other countries had electoral photographs (EPIC) similar to numbers in West Bengal. BJP management hit back that people from Bangladesh were registered as voters in West Bengal at the command of the ruling party.
