The district unit of the Congress Women’s Wing on Monday expressed strong opposition to the recent hike in LPG prices in Kalaburagi.
Protesters condemned the central government’s decision to hike domestic LPG cylinder prices by ₹60, terming it a “cruel measure” that disproportionately affects economically vulnerable households, including beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme.
At the same time, commercial LPG cylinders have seen an increase of ₹114.50, a burden that will eventually fall on the common consumer, the agitators said.
Leading the protest, Congress Women’s Unit District President Renuka M. Singhe slammed the BJP-led central government, saying such price escalation was betraying the interests of common citizens and taking advantage of their basic energy needs.
“This increase is not just a number, it is an additional burden on households already struggling with the rising cost of living. The worst affected are the beneficiaries of Ujjwala who were promised subsidized cooking power,” she noted.
The protest turned symbolic when party workers placed LPG cylinders across the road in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, rejecting the government’s move and highlighting the daily hardships faced by common families.
To draw attention to the impact on everyday life, protesting women cooked rotis on traditional wood-burning stoves in the streets, drawing public attention to the irony of paying more for modern cooking fuel while being forced to revert to age-old methods due to unavailability.
Agitators criticized the Center for prioritizing corporate and commercial interests over the welfare of citizens. They said the continued rise in fuel prices, including cooking gas, is a silent assault on household budgets, particularly affecting women who take care of the daily needs of the household.
