A permanent center to provide artificial limbs to knee amputees has opened in Trinidad and Tobago, which could change the lives of differently abled people in the Caribbean region.
The Jaipur Foot Prosthetics Center, set up by the non-profit organization Jaipur Foot USA, was inaugurated by Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to the Caribbean country on May 9 in the presence of Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamala Persad-Bissessar.
Mr. Jaishankar called the center a “gift of mobility and dignity” for Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caricom region, which includes more than 15 island nations.
Jaipur Foot USA, a support organization of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), will supply 600 artificial limbs to support the center, which was established in Penal, a town in southern Trinidad.
The American non-profit organization also deployed a highly qualified prosthetics expert from Jaipur to downtown Trinidad to train local technicians.
The establishment of a permanent center in the Caribbean country follows the success of the 50-day Jaipur walking camp organized in Port of Spain in October last year, which benefited more than 800 people.
“This permanent center will not only restore mobility, but also dignity and hope to differently-abled individuals throughout the Caribbean region,” Prem Bhandari, chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, said in a statement.
During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago in July last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the setting up of a prosthetic limb camp in the island nation.
Mr. Bhandari said the permanent center was set up within eight months of the Jaipur infantry camp.
One of the best examples of Indian ingenuity and barefoot engineering, the Jaipur Foot has helped several thousand victims of landmine blasts and accidents around the world walk again, he said.
