The live broadcast of a heated argument between doctors and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker in Jammu’s Udhampur on Wednesday (January 28, 2026) has prompted the J&K government to launch an inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has warned of action against employees who “ignore elected representatives”.
The incident took place on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) at the Government Medical College in Udhampur, where BJP MLA Pawan Gupta was seeking a meeting of doctors following the death of civilian Sanjay Gupta, a resident of Udhampur’s Sangoor, a few days ago. The meeting witnessed a heated exchange between MLAs and doctors which was streamed live online.
Several doctors objected to the live broadcast of the official meeting, which drew sharp reactions from netizens online. “It is a new medical college. There may be many loopholes, but the good things have to be recognized by MLAs as well. Moreover, the official meeting should not have been telecast live,” said the doctor on condition of anonymity.
In the face of flak, the government ordered an inquiry into the incident. Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, Government Medical College, Jammu, has been appointed as the Inquiry Officer and is directed to submit a “comprehensive report” within 15 days.
“The inquiry will look into the sequence of events and look into the administrative, security and institutional aspects related to the incident at GMC Udhampur that led to the circulation of the videos on social media,” an official order said.
Congress leader Sumeet Mangotra also condemned the alleged “misbehavior of doctors” with the BJP MLA.
“Indulging in political activities or working for a few select individuals will require strict action. We are never happy to take action against an employee. When honorable MLAs ask you (employees) to do something, you must understand that you are working within the constitutional framework. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wants work, not flattery,” Choudhary said.
