Pro-Khalistan slogans, posters Bhindranwale: What happened at the Golden Temple on the anniversary of Operation Blue Star | Today’s news

Pro-Chalistan slogans were raised on the premises of the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar on Saturday to mark the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army’s mission to flush out extremist elements from the holiest Sikh shrine in Amritsar in 1984.

The Hindustan Times reported that protesters gathered outside the Akal Takht, the highest secular and spiritual seat in Sikhism.

According to ANI, posters depicting Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who allegedly led Sikh extremists inside the compound in 1984, were distributed at the Akal Takht Sahib. June 6 is the death anniversary of Bhindranwale, head of Damdami Taksal, an orthodox Sikh educational organization and seminary founded by Guru Gobind Singh. He was killed along with his armed followers during Operation Blue Star launched by the Indian Army to flush out militants from the Golden Temple complex in June 1984.

Ahead of the occasion, the Punjab Police on Saturday set up a comprehensive security network in Amritsar and surrounding areas to maintain law and order. On June 4, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha visited the district to review the force deployment and confirmed that nearly 4,000 police personnel had been deployed to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.

This is a developing story. Further details were awaited.
