Congress President Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday (April 16, 2026) said that under the guise of implementing women’s reservation, the government wanted to slice and dice constituencies to ensure victory in the next elections and that it was an “open attack” on democracy.
Mrs Gandhi, who took part in the debate on three bills seeking changes to the Women’s Quota Act and the establishment of a delimitation commission, argued that the first steps to weaken democracy were taken when the government cornered the media and the Election Commission of India, and was now taking the attack a step further. “If this constitutional amendment is passed, democracy will end in India,” she said.
