
New Delhi: The Union Government is preparing to help public hospitals to carry out multiple authorities after the review showed only a quarter of 18,000 transplants in 2023.
The Ministry of Health has completed the assessment of all government institutions 2023 with a license to transplant authorities and is now in the process of reconciliation of last year’s data.
The main blocks of the injury were identified by the lack of medical knowledge and specialized ICU beds for transplant patients.
Approximately 90 government hospitals have a license to carry out authorities transplants – a procedure that is expensive in private hospitals, but within the reach of the poor in government.

The instructions for organ donations are given in the transplantation of the Act on the Human organs and Tissues of 1994 and the transplantation of human organs and tissues, 2014. These are monitored and regulated by the national organization of tissue and transplantation (notto).

India faces massive lack of organs for transplantation for cultural reasons and general lack of awareness, although the number of transplants has increased significantly from 4,990 in 2013 to 18,378 in 2023.

Identified with capacity problems
The Ministry of Health organized a wide consultation with hospital authorities from all over the country to discuss the matter. The last such meeting took place on Wednesday and included all government transplant hospitals from states and UT.

Better performances of government institutions include: AII India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims-New Delhi), Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital, Institute for kidney diseases and research center, PGI Chandigarh.
“There is no point in issuing new licenses to institutions until the existing runs right. We are trying to strengthen the capacity of government hospitals for live donors and deceased organ transplantation, because there is a huge waiting list in hospitals,” the second official said.
Although it has the largest population in the world, the level of organ donation in India is less than 1 per million inhabitants. Spain, has the highest level of organ donation in the world around 48 per million inhabitants.

In 2023, the Union government introduced instructions for transporting bodies to ensure a uniform policy of transport of bodies.
