March 15 is Mother’s Day in the UK, a day to remember mothers and the role they play in our lives. On the occasion, Prince William, Prince of Wales, also shared a never-before-seen picture of him with his late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash.
The photo, which was shared from the family’s private collection, showed the late Princess Diana with the then two-year-old William. The mother-son duo can be seen in a field of flowers in this 1984 photo, and the photo was reportedly taken at the family’s main home in Highgrove, Gloucestershire.
William shared the photo on his social media and wrote: “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of everyone who remembers someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day.”
The royal family’s X account also shared a Mother’s Day message accompanied by a selection of photos. One of the images shows the late Queen Elizabeth II sitting on a bench with the current King Charles III. and his sister Anna.
Another picture showed the late Queen with the Queen Mother. Another showed Camilla with her late mother Rosalind Shand.
The Prince of Wales’s children make cards for Diana
According to a Sky News report, the Prince of Wales previously said that his own children, George, Charlotte and Louis, make cards every year to remember their “grandmother Diana”. In 2021, Kensington Palace shared cards that contained handwritten heartfelt messages from the Prince of Wales’ children. Charlotte, who was five at the time, wrote: “Dear Grandma Diana, Thinking of you on Mother’s Day. I love you so much. Daddy misses you. Lots of love Charlotte.”

Death of Princess Diana
The Prince of Wales was 15 and Prince Harry was 12 when their mother, the late Princess Diana, died in a 1997 car crash in Paris. Diana, who was 36 at the time, was riding in a car with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed. The Mercedes reportedly went out of control at high speed when it entered an underground tunnel.
Mother’s Day celebrations in the UK
Mother’s Day is celebrated on a different date in the UK than in many other countries. While it is celebrated internationally on the second Sunday in May, it is celebrated in March. According to a BBC report, its origins in the UK date back to the Middle Ages, when celebrations were less about mothers and more about their homes and “mother churches”.
The report states that centuries ago, people who had moved away from their hometowns would return to visit their mother church, the church where they were baptized or regularly attended services, on the fourth Sunday of the Christian Lent season. Over time, this custom came to be called Mothering Sunday.
