Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK Sekarbabu said in Chennai on Sunday that priests in temples should not indulge in political activities at places of worship. They should confine themselves to performing pujas to the deities and performing their other designated duties in the temples. Responding to a question about a priest at the Singaravelar temple in Sikkalu who allegedly asked devotees to vote for a particular political party, he said an inquiry would be conducted into the matter and if there was any truth in it, necessary action would be taken.
He was speaking after a ceremony where four couples were married on behalf of the 400-year-old Somanathaswamy Temple in Kolathur. The minister said that the kumbhabhishekam of the temple will be held on November 30. Work at a total cost of ₹2.37 crore has been started on the temple.
