Households across Tamil Nadu will face an immediate mandate to inspect, clean and repair all rainwater harvesting structures as the Northeast Monsoon rains have begun in full swing.
According to a government order issued on October 16, 2026, as part of the renewed campaign on “Realizing Rainwater Harvesting as a Mass Movement – Renewed Initiatives”, citizens, housing complexes, commercial enterprises and institutions are required to ensure that their rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, filter chambers, recharge pits and wells are fully functional. Residents must actively participate by maintaining rainwater harvesting mechanisms at the source to improve groundwater recharge and maintain water security, the order said.
State and district level coordination committees chaired by the chief secretary and district collectors will monitor enforcement while urban and rural local bodies maintain basic records of existing, rejuvenated and newly created structures.
Tamil Nadu set guidelines for rainwater harvesting in 2002. The recent regulation is to counter rapid urbanisation, changing rainfall patterns and climate variability through sustained public participation and community ownership.
