Greater Bengaluru (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao has directed all the five Corporation Commissioners to prepare a short-term flood mitigation plan outlining works that can be completed in the next four months to minimize the impact of floods during the monsoon.
Mr. Rao asked the officials concerned to put nature-based and environment-friendly principles at the core of all development activities and stressed that eco-sensitive development and effective flood mitigation must be prioritized.
The chief commissioner also asked the officers to coordinate with the tourism department to develop the lakes as a public attraction while preserving their ecosystem. He made it clear that no diesel or fuel boats would be allowed in any lake and that only non-polluting alternatives would be introduced. The ship’s systems must ensure zero pollution and minimal disruption to aquatic life, he said.
Mr. Rao directed officials to study the feasibility of releasing ducks into the lakes, noting that ducks act as natural aerators and can help improve water quality. He added that the responsibility for the breeding and maintenance of ducks should be given through tendering to ensure accountability and legal compliance.
