HYDERABAD
The Telangana government has assessed crop losses on around 4.48 lakh acres belonging to 2.53 lakh farmers in a dozen districts, according to preliminary reports it has collected from officials in the field.
According to Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, the agriculture department has put the crop losses at the highest in Warangal district at more than 1.3 lakh hectares, including rice on nearly 71,000 acres, cotton on 55,000 acres and maize on 3,200 acres.
The report assessed the damage in 179 mandals in Warangal, Khammam, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Hanamkonda, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Karimnagar, Siddipet, Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar districts.
Crop wise, maximum damage/loss is assessed to paddy at over 2.82 lakh hectares followed by cotton at nearly 1.52 lakh acres, maize at nearly 5000 acres, chilli at over 3600 acres, pulses at around 1200 acres, groundnut in an area of nearly 2,700 acres.
Extent of loss/damage and number of farmers affected are Warangal – more than 1.3000 acres out of 80500 farmers, Khammam – 62400/42200, Suryapet – 56330/17660, Nalgonda – 52070/25770 34700/24900, Nagarkurnool – 33 560/14,400, Mahabubabad – 26,000/15,600, Jangaon – 25,000/8,200, Karimnagar – 23,550/21,460, Siddipet -1,8060 Bhadradri-Kothagudem – 1,450/730 and Mahabubnagar – 670 acres/715 farmers.
Meanwhile, he assured the farming community that suffered crop loss in the rains triggered by Cyclone Montha that the state government would help each and every one of them. He said that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy would visit the rain-affected areas and the compensation per acre would be decided in consultation with the Chief Minister.
