Prasar Bharati, the government’s national broadcaster, has uploaded the draft Content Syndication Policy to 2025 on its website for public consultation. The policy seeks to promote cultural outreach and monetize content while upholding its public service mandate, Information and Broadcasting Minister L. Murugan said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
A structured industry consultation was held with key stakeholders across the media ecosystem, including OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms, linear TV broadcasters, radio networks, telecom operators, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) operators and content aggregators, Mr. Murugan said in response to questions from TM Selvaganapathi, MP from Salem, Tamil Nadu.
The objective of this policy is to monetize content created by Doordarshan and Akashvani; archived national and regional content; digital content published on Prasar Bharati’s OTT platform; and live streaming of government events, festivals and sports, among others. Content may have been commissioned, co-produced, licensed or owned by Prasar Bharati.
The draft policy calls for “strategic collaboration” with domestic and international platforms to expand the reach of Prasar Bharati content and strengthen India’s global cultural presence. It provides flexible licensing models, including flat fee, revenue sharing and minimum warranty with revenue sharing.
