Power crisis: KSEB hopes for curbless October with supplies from Himachal Pradesh
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is hoping to keep October blackout-free with emergency power supplies from Himachal Pradesh to meet the peak demand.
According to KSEB representatives, supplies in the range of 600 MW to 800 MW were secured for October through the Himachal Pradesh Energy Directive. This will help KSEB meet the peak demand, they said.
The energy company is also in talks with the northern state about supplies for November and December. After a hiatus, electric curbs reappeared in the last week of September.
Keralam experienced a 900 MW shortfall on Wednesday, prompting KSEB to curtail power. Peak demand was recorded at 5,459 MW, the highest in September.
Throughout September, daily consumption was at a high level. Consumption during the 30-day period averaged 94.03 million units (mu). Imports of electricity continued to account for the largest share of satisfied demand. Imports averaged 71.33 mu, KSEB cargo dispatch data showed.
Since the south-west monsoon from June to September over Keralam is weak, the water supply in the hydel reservoirs has not improved much. As of September 30, the reserve was 61%, or the equivalent of 2,537.47 mu. On the same day in 2025, it was 3,267.63 mu.
