Postal vote for overseas voters can soon become a reality with the Indian Election Commission (ECI), which actively examines its feasibility.
The main election officer, Keral, Rathan U. Kelkar said on Thursday that his office urged ECI to introduce the facility for the upcoming elections to the assembly in the state.
The vast majority of the voters of the Indian (NRI) non -resident came from Kerala, which has a large compatriot community, especially in West Asian countries.
At the edge of the workshop on inclusive elections organized by the CEO on Thursday, Mr. Kelkar said that ECI examines the possibility of introducing postal ballots for overseas voters and is issued to voters through Indian embassies abroad.
Currently, NRI voters perform their franchise by producing their passports in the polling stations in their location. Postal ballots would include the same process that followed the electronically transmitted voting system for service voters. In this case, the postal ballots are transmitted by electronic means for voters and the marked ballots are returned by post.
Mr. Kelkar said his office followed the matter and led discussions with ECI officials.
Of the 1.2 lakh overseas voters from all over India, ECI for Lok Sabha 2024 surveys, 89,839 was from Kerala. Men voters consisted of most (83 765), women (6 065) and transgender voters nine. At the time of Lok Sabha elections in 2019, 87,648 NRI voters were registered in Kerala Rolls.
When the CEO’s office published the results of a special summary revision in January 2025, NRI voters in the state showed an increase to 90 124.
