A solution to the long-pending Tummidihatti project appears to be in sight, with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis agreeing to set up a joint committee to examine the feasibility of raising the height of the project to 150 meters or 152 meters to serve the interests of Telangana farmers from Adilabad district to Rangareddybad.

A meeting between chief ministers in Mumbai on Monday broke the ice on the issue. The two states have an agreement on the project’s height of 148 meters, signed in 2016 when K. Chandrashekhar Rao was chief minister. Mr. Revanth Reddy tried to impress upon Mr. Fadnavis that the earlier agreement would sound the death knell for the interests of farmers and tribal areas of Telangana. He promised the best compensation to Maharashtra farmers whose land will be flooded after the height increase.

After the meeting, Mr. Fadnavis said in a social media post that a joint committee comprising the chief secretaries and secretaries of the water resources department of the two states would study the technical aspects and potential inundation of areas in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra will also independently examine the issues related to the elevation of the Tummidihatti Irrigation Project. This approach will remain constructive and cooperative while protecting Maharashtra’s interests, he said.

Mr. Revanth Reddy announced that he had very productive discussions with Mr. Fadnavis on increasing the FRL height of the proposed barrage and thanked him for his positive assessment of the proposal. “Shri Fadnavis has assured us that while he is looking after the interests of his own state, in the larger national interest, he will do everything to help Telangana, especially the tribal communities in the erstwhile Adilabad district,” he said.
