(AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) Colombia secured top spot in Group K at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Portugal to an entertaining 0-0 draw at the Miami Stadium in Florida, the result sending both nations safely through to the round of 32 and confirming the South Americans as group winners. Notably, this match also marked Colombia’s first-ever goalless draw (0–0) in FIFA World Cup history.Although neither side managed to find a breakthrough, the contest was nothing short of fierce. Colombia dictated much of the attacking play throughout the evening, relentlessly testing Portugal’s defense and forcing goalkeeper Diogo Costa into a series of excellent saves, while Cristiano Ronaldo had a frustrating night after his record performance against Uzbekistan. The draw leaves Colombia unbeaten in the group stage with seven points from two wins and a draw, while Portugal progress as runners-up with five points from one win and two draws.

Colombia dictates the proceedings but Portugal resist the relentless pressure

The stakes were clear before kick-off. Colombia entered the final match of Group K with six points after victories over Uzbekistan and DR Congo, needing only a draw to secure first place. With four points from a draw with DR Congo before a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, Portugal needed a win to leapfrog Néstor Lorenzo’s side and claim the group.

Backed by a loud and largely pro-Colombian crowd at Miami Stadium, Los Cafeteros immediately entered the contest. Their aggressive pressing repeatedly disrupted Portugal’s attempts to build from the back, while quick transitions into wide areas stretched Roberto Martínez’s defensive form throughout the opening half.

The numbers reflected Colombia’s early dominance. In the opening 36 minutes, they generated an expected goal number of 0.58 compared to Portugal’s 0.06, repeatedly getting into dangerous positions and taking 23 touches in Portugal’s penalty area, while Portugal managed just nine at the other end.Jhon Arias provided Colombia’s first big opening when his powerful effort forced Diogo Costa into a superb reflex save, setting the tone for what turned out to be a superb goalkeeping display. Portugal struggled to create sustained attacking pressure, although Bruno Fernandes almost punished Colombia against the run of play from close range, which Camilo Vargas reacted sharply to tip around the post.

The game was briefly halted in the 30th minute when VAR reviewed a possible Portuguese penalty, but after a lengthy review the referee overruled the appeal and play continued without incident.

Ronaldo’s difficult evening contrasts with Costa’s heroics

Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, once again led Portugal’s attack but found himself increasingly isolated against the commanding central defensive partnership of Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí.The Portugal captain was restricted to a single attempt on goal, which failed to test Vargas as Colombia successfully denied him meaningful service for much of the evening.Still, Ronaldo still came closest to creating the defining moment of the night. Midway through the contest, he rolled back the years with a spectacular bicycle kick attempt after a teasing delivery sailed into the penalty area. Ronaldo timed his dive perfectly and connected cleanly with an acrobatic effort, only for Santiago Arias to dive bravely into the path of the strike to block what could have become one of the most memorable goals of the tournament.Earlier, in the 20th minute, Ronaldo showed his trademark intelligence with a clever blind flick on the edge of the area that released Bruno Fernandes into space, but Lucumí recovered brilliantly to make a perfectly timed save before the midfielder could pull the trigger.Portugal went close again later in the second half when Ronaldo raced onto a perfectly balanced assist from João Félix just outside the penalty area and fired just wide. It was a close moment, Ronaldo moved just a fraction too early and strayed just marginally offside, meaning the finish on goal wouldn’t have counted either.

The sequence was emblematic of João Félix’s influence throughout the match as he orchestrated several attacking moves and consistently created opportunities for both Ronaldo and Portugal’s forward line in what was one of his most complete and creative performances of the tournament.

While Ronaldo struggled to influence the proceedings in the final third, Diogo Costa proved indispensable at the opposite end. The Portuguese goalkeeper made six saves on the night, twice as many as Vargas, and repeatedly frustrated Colombia as wave after wave of attacks came.

His performance ultimately preserved the tie and earned him wide acclaim as the outstanding individual performance of the match.

James pulls the strings as Colombia’s pressure goes unrewarded

If Portugal relied on Costa, Colombia’s rhythm came almost entirely through James Rodríguez. The experienced playmaker operated between midfield and attack, controlling possession with authority, consistently finding spaces behind Portugal’s midfield and repeatedly unlocking defenses with incisive passing. His best contribution came in the 62nd minute, when he weaved a perfectly balanced pass into the path of Richard Ríos, whose first-time finish went agonizingly wide of the far post after an excellent overlap.

James departed to a standing ovation in the 75th minute after another level performance, once again dictating the pace of much of Colombia’s attacking football.Luis Díaz remained a constant threat throughout the 90 minutes. The winger repeatedly isolated João Cancelo before later testing substitute Diogo Dalot, stretching the Portuguese defense with his pace and direct running. Although he only scored one attempt on goal, much of Colombia’s remarkable attacking volume stemmed from his ability to push Portugal’s full-backs deep and create space for runners arriving centrally.

Colombia attempted 26 shots at full-time, compared to Portugal’s 13, while six of those efforts forced Costa into action against just two saves required by Vargas. Colombia also earned five corners to Portugal’s two, completed 480 of their 525 passes with an impressive 91 percent accuracy and maintained 55 percent of possession, despite Portugal’s close pass accuracy with 93 percent of their 394 completed passes.

VAR heartbreak seals triumph for Colombia’s group before knockout routes are confirmed

Colombia’s biggest disappointment came deep into the break. In the second minute of added time, Davinson Sánchez rose highest in the penalty area to head past Costa to send the stadium into celebration as players and fans believed they had found a dramatic winner.

Instead, a lengthy VAR review silenced the Colombian crowd before the goal was ruled out for offside, leading to a deadlock until the final whistle.

Portugal still created one last chance from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick in the closing stages. Ronaldo aggressively attacked the delivery, drawing both Lucumí and Davinson Sánchez towards him with his aerial movement, creating space behind the defensive line for his oncoming teammates. However, the cross sailed narrowly over his head and Portugal’s runners failed to take advantage. The game ended with Colombia enjoying 55% possession, 26 shots to Portugal’s 13 and twice as many efforts on goal, while both teams maintained a remarkable quality of passing despite their relentless intensity. Colombia committed 11 fouls compared to Portugal’s six, reflecting the physical but controlled nature of the match.

The draw was enough to confirm Colombia as Group K winners with seven points and a goal difference of +3, while Portugal finished second with five points and a higher overall goal difference of +5. DR Congo finished third with three points, so their hopes hinged on the ranking of the third-placed teams, while Uzbekistan finished last with one point.Colombia’s reward for topping the group is a Round of 32 meeting with Ghana at BC Place in Vancouver on July 2, a trip that also keeps them away from several tournament favorites in the immediate knockout rounds. Portugal, meanwhile, face a much tougher task after finishing as runners-up to set up a heavyweight European showdown with Group L winners Croatia at the MetLife Stadium on July 3, with the winner set to advance against France if Les Bleus advance from their own round of 32.
