Portfolio trouble: Ramalinga Reddy resigns, Muniyappa sulks

A day after portfolios were allotted to cabinet ministers, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar faced trouble from senior colleagues as one resigned and another publicly expressed displeasure with the allocation. Amidst the displeasure, the chief minister clarified that the allotment decision has been taken by the Congress high command and cannot be delayed.

While Ramalinga Reddy was upset over not being given the development portfolio in Bengaluru, he sent his resignation letter to the chief minister, another senior minister KH Muniyappa said that if he is not given a portfolio commensurate with his seniority, he will not take over the responsibility of the food and civil supplies department allotted to him.

The Congress high command, however, learned that it had taken a strong stand against such public stands by the disgruntled ministers and was instructed not to accede to their demands.

Mr. Reddy, who signed his resignation letter in the media, also refused to go personally to hand over the resignation letter. He said the letter would be sent through an official. However, he clarified that he will remain in Congress as a legislator.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muniyappa fired a salvo by saying that senior citizens should be given portfolios that are “useful to society”. He learned to look at the welfare department, which had not yet been assigned. The implementation of internal reservation issues seems to be weighing on his mind, sources said.
